An observation: Birds poop and run. They fly around, land on a branch, poop and then fly away as if it never happened. Meanwhile their poop lands on the ground, dirt if we are lucky, and contributes to fertilization of soil. (Sometimes they don't even land, they just fly and poop) So I was thinking, how great it would be if humans could just poop and run. The problem is that our poop is big and stinky and would grow all kinds of toxic bacteria if just left in piles all around. In San Francisco a new program harnesses the power of dog poop near parks. When people walk their dogs and the dogs poop the dog walkers gather the poop and put it in a compost bin somewhere in the park (I have no idea how many parks are actually doing this). The poop is then recycled and used to add nutrients to park soil and gardens. Imagine this: Instead of the coin operated public restrooms on busy street corners (of which there are too few in America anyway-and they *should* be free) what if we had composting toilets near parks and community gardens... Then the poop that people carry around while looking for the nearest McDonalds could actually go to good use (and people wouldn't have to by 'excuse' fries). And like the entrepreneurs we are -- because the program was so successful -- people would start planting more urban gardens in-between McDonalds just to have a reason to collect poop. A smart capitalist would realize that the quality of vegetables they can grow in a well fertilized garden would supply yuppie grocery stores with overpriced food stuffs... and the plethora of gardens would encourage urban kids to play outside more, gaining necessary social skills and appreciation of nature, which will probably help them feel better about themselves, chill out, stay in school, and learn things that would help them get jobs good enough to afford yuppie vegetables. Underneath the absurdity is a valid point: There are in fact other ways to do things than how we are trained to imagine. And all this from looking out the window!
